Spring Racing 2012

Fine Straw Hat : making

the finished hat !! I have taken lots of photo's of me making this hat so you (hopefully) can follow the steps required to get such a finish. I started with a beautiful fine straw in a sensational dark cream colour which helps with the whole effect. I'll often hang onto a hood for years before I take the plunge and make a hat out of it as you need all the elements around you that you know will work well together.....as I am moving studio and shop I have uncovered some lovely materials and came across the soft tulle that I draped around the crown of this hat....and so it all began !

below the desk so often so full of 'stuff' you can't see the actual desk but then out of this mess a hat emerges. You can see the hat shape taking place I have just finished wiring the brim and softly letting the edge wave.....I also decided that the edge should have a tiny, tiny edge so as to not distract from the straw and so I chose a satin bias which took me a couple of months to find the exact colour I wanted (an ecru colour)....

Did you know..............

Did you know we are moving? After 13 years we are getting out of the leaky boat, moving to brand new shop and studio - just a few doors down Malvern Road towards Chapel Street, how convenient ! After much searching and looking I have found a wonderful Victorian space with 12 foot ceilings full of light and love on the first floor at 296 - 298 Malvern Road, Prahran - FROM 30h SEPTEMBER.
I am so looking forward to our new pure white floors and walls - the light in the space is sensational. Our entrance will be from Essex Street, the same street as the Prahran Pool ! It's a mammoth job this moving lark, so stay tuned for all the gory details, hopefully nothing falls off the back of the truck.

A Winter Hat

Just finished a lovely taupe fur felt hat made to order (so it fits like a glove) my client so happy she wore it out the door, a nice wearable cloche shape perfect for our winter weather.

Come and join our friendly team in Julie's large light filled studio in Prahran. Learn how to make hats to a couture level with like minded people - from the expert ! We guarantee you will enjoy the hand making process and you will be able to expand your knowledge of hand making hats and special trims. Discover the 'how to' if you are a beginner. You will expect to make at least one hat (summer or winter) or perhaps you are a student looking to create a special piece for your folio? Some of the smaller items and tools that you need will be supplied or available at a small charge. Materials could add $100 to the class cost depending on the requirements for your design. Use any material you like to make a hat Julie will know the best way to put it together.

Wedding Belles Anna and David

The lively Anna on her wedding day & some snaps she sent me. Love the group shot everyone relaxed and ready for the reception on a glorious sunny Melbourne day in the Mornington Peninsula.
