Hand Covered headband

The base for many a fine headband, I use silk with beaded tulle overlay to achieve this 'lush' look, above is the finished design.

You only get to see a small amount of detail however the whole shape and look would be very different on a flat band.

This is the latest in customers own fabric, below.

Often the beading has to be re attached as below.

I tie off the ends of the beading to make sure that they do not shift
or drop off while being worn, as below.

An earlier post you will remember this is how I hand cover
the flatter metal bands in petersham.

decide on the shape - I have used my trusty poupe (milliners mannequin) to help me decide on the shape detail, note the pins holding all in place while the felt dries on the poupe......

above sew well in the corners the wire will be bound with petersham or velvet eventually to cover completely

the shape is wired (I have used white wire so that you can see what I am doing but normally I would use black wire) to keep it's shape and note the detail on the tight corners - easiest to bend the wire to fit and sew well at corners.......

This is my client Ann McCoy's hat in the most delicious hotter than hot pink shot silk dupion. Sensational on her ! So nice to see it after all these years and to hear of all the many, many times she has worn it with all the stories it holds. It was just in for a spruce up and I just had to share it with you. I must have made this in the early to mid nineties and it still holds up I think as a great design. Best of all my client Ann loves it to death and looks after it so well.

Vintage Tulle Bow Headband

Just the in's and out's of the perfect bow, one of my students calls me 'The Queen of Bows' and the best results are achieved by hand gathering.... slow but the results are usually perfect, here are some that I made this week.
Many of you will see my favorite colour here in this nude vintage tulle. I have mounted these tulle bows onto copper metal bands as the patina looks great with the nude.
Am also making big bows in navy blue velvet for winter for a wholesale customer and I'll post them as soon as they are in store. Navy velvet is sensational and hard to beat - tricky to work with but luckily I have a very good quality German cotton backed velvet which is practically making itself..

Spring Racing 2010

A hat for the new season.

I love the way it curves around the head.

The texture of the vintage cherry coloured straw
and the bright pink feathers adds a dimension that I adore.

Sewing the head fitting in place .

Some hefty hand sewing through several layers to keep
all nicely tucked under the head fitting..

Deciding where the support detail will go as I don't
really want it seen from the front or back - tricky. Can't see it from front (above)
and will live with the small amount I can see from the back.

Curving the piece of straw I have decided to use as a
support for the feathers.

I ran a gather thread through the straw to pull the inner side
in tight so it would curve to fit the feathers and hopefully not
be seen from the front or back.
I then hit the curved straw with the iron and wet rag
to make it a permanent curve. Magic.

Just realizing that the feather will need some
support.....although I had backed it in some pale pink felt.
Here I am assessing how wide and how long the curved
piece of straw needs to be.

Woo hoo new season is here ! although it is still freezing outside! Just adding the finishing touches to a design for the shop and available here. Complex little hat in the end which started out when I found a cherry coloured a piece of vintage strip straw and just adored the bright cherry colour . The shape grew, then the silk flowers, then the feather trim, then that needed support and it seemed to go on and on, but finally here is the result.

Fairy Fingers

Have just used my 'fairy fingers' to make this beautiful biscuit coloured straw up - have made for a stylist so am hoping that I have some nicer than average photo's of the finished product to show you in the near future. But in the mean time for all the milliners craving a look at something new...this straw is monumentally hard to come by now. I have a little stack of these beautiful vintage pari buntels and couldn't resist trimming in the exact same colour Italian (Milan) straw for the crown and the edge. This very delicate and slightly brittle straw required my 'fairy fingers' which was taught to me in London at Philip Somerville all those years ago !

The Finished Hat

Finished the black hat with contrast stitching , have added faux patent headband and finished the brim with some velvet. This is the first time I have used the new stretch velvet to edge a brim and I think that although it is way easier to get a good edge the colour is not quite black enough to my liking although no one else would notice but to my eye it is just not black/black. Added a lining that matched the stitching which is a nice touch and unexpected. Note the double brim so that I only have the detail stitching on the top, just another detail which is probably lost on many (but not me) !

Stitch Detail

Some works in progress, love the combination of black/cream. I have used a strong 'pearlized' vintage cotton here for the feature stitching.

Stitching rows gradually build up - I am not expert at getting all the rows perfectly even as I tend to run the machine too fast being an impatient modern girl but I think it all works out in the long run. When I was doing my Millinery training at Philip Somerville in London, England there was an old milliner called Edith who used to specialize in this type of work and I can now see that this is necessary. As I only attempt this type of work every now and again I am not a perfect machinist. Edith used to make the ENTIRE hat using this method including the crown. I tend to only use it as a feature. This is a work in progress and I will be adding to the detail so I'll keep you posted.
Keep your cotton ends all in check as this will save time with trimming them off in the long run.

Just some snaps of other stitched detail hats I am working on at the moment. Look at the amazingly lovely long even stitches my old 'singer' manages - it makes this type of work a breeze as it is so solid and dependable - don't forget to fill TWO bobbins with your cotton FIRST so that if you run out out you have another ready to go.

How to Make a Hat with Stitch Detail

I attach the ribbon by stitching in place from the underside hiding all the stitches under the headfitting.

Where the ribbon meets I decide to have a small feature in the center of the ribbons, this is just the same ribbon width however I have folded it so that it is narrower as this always looks better.

Using pins I decide where I have to curve the ribbon with the iron and where I will stop the curve and have the ribbon straight so that it sits flat on the brim.

Matching the ribbon for around the crown luckily I have the exact colour in a vintage petersham. I have also heavily stitched this ribbon so that it matches in both colour and texture.

Stitching from the underside is trimmed of loose ends.

You have to be prepared to squish the crown to get the stitching where you want it. No stiffener on this brim (some slight sizing on the crown) and so it is all quite flexible - my trusty ol 'singer' is perfect for this job as she will stitch any thickness and gives a beautiful even long stitch length.

Working out the pattern I used a silver pencil so I had a rough guide for my stitches, pins are there also just as a guide and as I draw with the silver pencil I remove the pins as pins in a brim while you are doing this intense stitching can throw you off and cause your stitching to go haywire. I want the stitching to emulate a ribbon detail that you would find on a 1940's style hat.

Making hats for the shop and this is how I go about making a felt hat with stitched detail. The colour of the hat and stitching pretty much needs to be spot on as I think it looks better unless it is decided that a contrast would be good ie. black with cream stitching. I made this hat from a lovely burgandy coloured Peach bloom hood. The cotton I have stitched with matches perfectly as does the ribbon I have used on the headfitting and hat band.

So here is my studio and some production photo's - this is actually quite tidy as I just had a big clean up. I like to have my ribbons within reach and love how they look all together. I have my velvet ribbons in drawers all colour coded (until I mess it all up!) Tissue paper is on the windows to stop the sun getting in my eyes in summer but as it is winter you will note that although it is only 5.30pm in the afternoon already we have lost the light. I have had daylight fluro lights installed and after they came and did the installation I could not stop looking at the palm of my hand as I could not believe the difference it made everything is so much clearer. I have taken a photo from the shop looking into my studio and as you can see I have the perfect position to see and hear customers coming in and am always working at my desk with one eye out for customers. The baby gate is for....my two dogs Ruby (on the left) and Teddy - they often come to work with me. They spend the whole day pretending to be in jail and trying to get someone to release them. I love the size (my blocks are in the back room and a large storage area as well) of my studio and the natural light from two four big windows is unbeatable - no excuse but to create.

Come and join our friendly team in Julie's large light filled studio in Hawksburn. Learn how to make hats with like minded people !

We guarantee you will enjoy the hand making process and you will be able to expand your knowledge of hand making hats and special trims. Discover the 'how to' if you are a beginner. You will expect to make at least one hat (summer or winter) or perhaps you are a student looking to create a special piece for your folio?

Some of the smaller items and tools that you need will be supplied or available at a small charge. Materials could add $100 to the class cost depending on the requirements for your design. Use any material you like to make a hat Julie will know the best way to put it together.

Two very fine quality vintage Borsalino velour felts came my way and I just wanted to share their beauty. The ruby red one has already sold to a lovely petite client with grey/white hair and the colour looks sensational on her. I still have the very dark green one here to make and am just contemplating the design..................

This is classic vintage and I love the look. I often have a client ask for this style of hat and........ for all out there the correct name for this hat style is a pillbox (not a Pillar Box! that's a letter box !) Hard to wear well and this one works well because the flowers add softness to the sides of the otherwise rigid style.

Love the novel way this is worn again you just never know when you design something how, what or who is going to wear it, these photo's from a recent parade showcasing my marabou stoles and capes for Bridal wear ! so out she marches after a costume drama backstage - but I loved it and thought she looked wonderful. Model wears 1940's Marabou stole in ivory and our lace headband by Folly ! by Julie Fleming (stay tuned for more Folly ! by Julie Fleming styles)

Lovely to see the finished product as a stylist sees. Here is a hat I was working away on unsure of who or how it would be warn ....and wham o I get this back from a stylist who used the hat in some editorial. Love what she has done ! This is using a sage green vintage hood that had been hanging around and then a friend bought me this great silk ribbon on a trip to the States and suddenly it all came together.

A beautiful peach bloom fur felt in the most unusual colour was inspiration enough for this hat which I have just finished. Perfect cloche style for everyday and great with a coat.
